Fire cleanup

What Fire Damage Cleanup Covers

Fire damage cleanup is the hands-on part: making the house safe, getting the burned material and the water out, and cleaning what is left so it can be rebuilt. It is the first stage of fire damage restoration.

We stop where rebuilding starts. Your contractor puts the house back together once it is clean and dry. Memphis families and businesses have called ServiceMaster by Riverside for this work since 1989.

  • Board-up of broken windows, doors and openings
  • Burned debris carried out and hauled away by our crew
  • Charred drywall, insulation and flooring torn out
  • Water from the fire hoses pumped and extracted
  • Soot and smoke cleaned off what stays
  • Odor treated and the structure dried

How it unfolds

The First Days of a Memphis Fire Cleanup, Phase by Phase

Fire cleanup is not one step after another. Several jobs run at the same time. This chart shows what overlaps, so you know what to expect each time you come by the house.

  1. Safety check and board-up

    Openings closed, house secured

    First night

  2. Firefighting water out

Pumps and extractors start right away

    First night to first days

  3. Debris and tear-out

Burned material bagged and hauled off

    First days

  4. Soot and smoke cleaning

Room by room, top to bottom

First days to the next week

  5. Structural drying

Runs in the background the whole time

    First days until dry

  6. Odor treatment

    After the residue is gone

    The next week

  7. Hand-off to your contractor

    Clean, dry, ready to rebuild

    Until dry

Every fire is different. A small kitchen fire can move through these phases in days. A large fire takes longer.

Fire origin

Cleanup Depends on Where the Fire Started

What burned decides what comes out, how far the residue went and who needs to look at the house before we start.

Kitchen Fires

What usually comes out
Burned cabinets, the range hood, scorched counters and the drywall behind the stove.
Where the damage spreads
A greasy, strong-smelling film across the kitchen ceiling and into the rooms nearby.
Before we start
Keep the stove off until it is checked.

Electrical Fires in Walls and Bedrooms

What usually comes out
Drywall is opened around the outlet or wire, and scorched framing and insulation come out.
Where the damage spreads
A burnt-plastic smell inside the wall and sticky residue on nearby surfaces.
Before we start
An electrician checks the circuit before any power goes back on.

Dryer and Laundry Room Fires

What usually comes out
Lint, the burned dryer and vent line, and the wall and ceiling around them.
Where the damage spreads
Oily soot from burned plastics and fabric, often into the hallway and closets.
Before we start
Have the dryer vent route checked before a new dryer goes in.

Garage Fires

What usually comes out
Burned shelving and stored items, garage drywall and the door into the house.
Where the damage spreads
Smoke from fuel, paint and chemicals into the attic and the rooms next to the garage.
Before we start
Gas cans and chemicals are handled first. Call MLGW if a gas line is near.

After the hoses

Firefighting Water Is Half the Job

Putting out a house fire takes a lot of water. By the time the fire trucks leave, many homes have more water damage than fire damage.

That water starts soaking in at once, so our emergency water removal crew works on it the first night, at the same time as the board-up.

  • 01

    The rooms that burned

Soaked drywall, insulation and flooring under the debris.

  • 02

    The floor below

Water runs down through ceilings and light fixtures.

  • 03

    Inside the walls

Wall cavities fill and stay wet behind the paint.

  • 04

    The crawl space

Water drains under the house and sits on the soil.

  • Kitchen cleaned so you can book your health inspection

Why choose us

Questions to Ask a Memphis Fire Cleanup Company

After a fire, you will get calls from more than one company. Ask each of them these questions. Here are our answers.

  1. Q1

How soon can you get here?

    Our answer:

Any hour, any day. Our crew is usually on site within 2 to 4 hours, and the board-up starts that same night.

  2. Q2

How do you keep soot from spreading while you work?

    Our answer:

Air scrubbers run the whole time, and loose soot comes up with HEPA vacuums before anything gets wiped.

  3. Q3

Will you deal with the water from the fire hoses too?

    Our answer:

Yes. We pump and extract it with our own equipment, then dry the structure to IICRC standards and check it with moisture meters and thermal cameras.

  4. Q4

What will you use on the smoke smell?

    Our answer:

Thermal fogging and hydroxyl, after the residue is cleaned off. We do not use ozone in your home.

  5. Q5

Can you work with my insurance company?

    Our answer:

Yes. Once you have a claim number for a covered loss, we bill your insurer directly and follow their guidelines.

  6. Q6

Who will be in my house?

    Our answer:

IICRC certified technicians from a local company that has worked in Memphis since 1989.

FAQ

Fire Cleanup FAQs

Have a question that is not listed here? Call us and talk to a real person on our Memphis team.

Ask us anything(901) 459-6610

Who hauls away the burned debris?

We do. Burned drywall, insulation, flooring and debris are bagged, carried out and hauled away by our crew, so you do not have to rent a dumpster.

Should I throw anything out before the adjuster comes?

Not if you can help it. Take photos of everything first and keep a list. Throw out food, medicine and anything unsafe, but photograph it before it goes.

Can you clean up after a small stovetop fire?

Yes. A fire that stayed on the stove can still leave a film across the kitchen and smoke in the next rooms. Small jobs get the same cleaning steps, just fewer of them.

How soon after the fire can cleanup start?

As soon as the fire department releases the property. Board-up and water removal can start that same night, day or weekend.

Does fire cleanup include rebuilding?

No. We board up, clean up, remove the water and dry the structure. A contractor of your choice does the rebuilding once we are done.

What does fire damage cleanup cost?

It depends on how much burned, how far the smoke went and how much water was used. National cost guides give wide ranges for fire work, so your free quote is the only real number.
